River sand - safe for children, safe for plants

If you going to use sand in your potting mixes, like I do, it is advisable to use river sand over other forms. River sand is less sharp, thus gentler on the plants roots. It took me along time to source it however. When I asked around no one knew what I was talking about. That was until I learnt that river sand is used in children’s sandpits, obviously for the same reason - less sharp. So when I asked at the local hardware store “do you have sandpit sand?” they responded “sure” - but apparently they still don’t have river sand ;)

  1. NICE BLOG!!! Thanks for sharing a nice information. This is a good quality sand good for plastering, building, topping, hydroponics, and Bonsai plants and added to concrete as a filler. This sand is expensive and is more a specialist type sand. It also works very well as a filter. In fact I have used it to good effect in my swimming pool.
